Ear Training Exercises for Singers - Part 1 Suzy S. Having trouble staying on pitch? Developing your ear even if youre convinced you werent naturally born with the skill can do wonders for your singing. Read on as Raleigh, NC teacher Cameron F.   explains As a vocalist, nothing is more important than a well-trained ear. This is all we have to depend on to tune ourselves! We have no frets or keys, no strings and no tuning pegs, only our vocal cords to create the sound and our ear to focus the pitch. We have to make sure the tools we do have are well crafted and reliable. This is where ear training comes in. We have to listen to what is happening in the music around us and change ourselves to fit it. Even those lucky enough to have perfect pitch must abide by this rule. If the ensemble is playing a little sharp or flat, the singer has to move with them. So you can see how important ear training is! Highly trained singers are able to sing well and on pitch with the most challenging ensembles. So, let’s take a look at a few things you can do to train your ear. There are two main techniques that I will be going over, one of which is very basic, the other much more advanced. Let’s start with the basics. As a beginner, the most important skill to develop is the ability to match pitch. This is the cornerstone to singing in tune, and is the ability to hear a note and recreate it with your voice. Many people are able to do it naturally, but if you can’t, don’t worry! You are not out of luck. A very basic way to begin matching pitch is to start by creating it yourself. Sing any note you want, and ask someone, preferable someone more musically experienced than you are, to find it on a piano, or any other instrument. Ideally, another singer would be best. When choosing your pitch, make sure you sing in a range that is comfortable and relaxed for you. Once they have found your pitch, stop singing. Listen to the note they are playing, and remember the note you had chosen (they should be the same). Now try to recreate the pitch while your assistant continues to hold your original note. Do this with many different pitches, and eventually you will be able to switch roles. Your assistant will chose the pitch, and you will be able to match it! You can also follow along with a video like this one on YouTube for practice: It is important to mention something about the physics of sound here, as this bit of knowledge will help beginners hear when they are close, but not quite on the right pitch. In scientific terms, a musical note is referred to as a “frequency. When two frequencies are very, very close but not identical you may notice volume swells (or beats) in the pitch. The further away from each other the two pitches are, the faster the swells. This is how most musicians tune their instruments by ear. For singers, this can be helpful in many ways. Many who are just learning to match pitch complain that they have a hard time telling if they are too low (flat) or too high (sharp). If you can get close, than listening to the beats will help you figure that out. Change the pitch in one direction and see if the beats speed up or slow down. If they speed up, go back in the opposite direction. If they slow down, then you’ve got it. Remember what it sounds like when you have to move up, and vice versa. Eventually, you will figure out which is which just by listening. From there, you can move on to slightly more advanced exercises. Have your assistant play a few different notes on a given instrument and try to sing them back to him/her, as a warm up. After doing this for a while, have him/her play two notes at the same time. Listen very carefully, and try to separate them. Your assistant should ask you to match one of the two notes, and then the other. Once you are comfortable with that, have your assistant play three notes at a time, and repeat the process. This will be more difficult, but the benefits are huge. Being able to separate chords is a great skill for any singer to have, as it will allow you to feel more comfortable and knowledgeable within any musical setting, as well as help you improvise, should you need to. Can you imagine a time where an artist as talented as Michelangelo could still be hated by some?Born in the area surrounding Venice in 1490, towards the end of the Quattrocento, he disappeared on 27th August 1576 in the Republic of Venice’s capital.Titian also painted religious art. (Source: Wikimedia Commons)The Venetian painter owes a lot to Giorgione who collaborated with him. He specialised in frescoes. He also took inspiration from Antonio da Correggio, especially half-tone backgrounds.He favoured a process known as colorito in which paint is used to progressively give a painting body, layer by layer. Darker colours are usually applied first and the lighter and brighter colours are applied later.This artistic freedom is a large part of the Renaissance’s humanism which resulted in daring new subjects such as The Rokeby Venus which would directly inspire Manet’s Olympia three centuries later. This idea would be later picked back up by the visual arts and contempora ry art in general.Ancient themes such as those from Roman myths are gladly revisited. There are plenty of examples of religious commissions. Much like Michelangelo, Titian was regularly commissioned by religious institutions to pain works for them.This Venetian artist set himself apart from the moral conventions of the yesteryear by bringing both art and morality into the modern age.However, at the age of seventeen, Mantegna parted himself from Squarcione. He later claimed that Squarcione had gained from his work without paying the rights.If so many big names came from Italy, why stop there? There are plenty of people who could have made this list like classical, baroque, and opera composers (Clementi, Giuseppe, Verdi, Puccini, etc.), Italian directors (Visconti, for example) and many more. And do you know how many strings a flamenco guitar usually has?The Different Types of Metal GuitarNaturally, when we say ‘metal guitar’ we mean guitars used for metal music â€" heavy metal, thrash, speed, grindcore, black, power, death and doom. Those names sound rather ominous but the music is really not so bad.All of these types of metal music and others not mentioned all rely on the electric guitar. The differences lie in how they are constructed, how many strings they have and the sound effects it can make.For instance, the solid-body guitar relies on electric pickups and an amplifier to transmit its sound. If you have such a guitar handy, try strumming it without plugging it in; the sound is flat and hollow.A chambered-body guitar helps achieve a quasi-acoustic tone while still retaining the essential characteristics and sound of an unchambered guitar. Another advantage is that it is often a bit lighte r than solid-body guitars.A semi-acoustic guitar has roughly the same depth as a solid-body guitar but its body is hollow and the electronic pickups are on the body rather than built-in.Like its fully acoustic counterpart, the semi-acoustic is made from thin sheets of wood. While its acoustic properties are not sufficient for a live concert performance, the guitar player may unplug it and strum it as they would a classical guitar.If you were playing at an ‘unplugged’ session, you would likely want a full hollow-body guitar. They are considered electric guitars because they have fitted pickups. And, like semi-acoustic guitars, they have f-shaped sound holes.An electric-acoustic guitar may be outfitted in several different ways: a piezoelectric pickup under the instrument’s bridge or on the bridge mounting plate, or they may have a condenser microphone inside their body.This type of electric guitar is considered more an acoustic instrument than an electric one because the pickup s transmit vibration from the guitar body rather than from the strings. In some cases, the added string may add to the treble range, while keeping the bass range of a six-string.Tuning a metal guitar, whether it has six strings or seven, works much the same way as a regular guitar; the guitar player simply incorporates a lower B, resulting in B1-E2-A2-D3-G3-B3-E4. If yours is a six-string, simply omit the B1.Naturally, there are other ways to tune this guitar; for instance, a seven-string jazz guitarist might prefer dropped-A tuning (A1-E2-A2-D3-G3-B3-E4); metal musicians opt for this tuning because it makes it easier to play power chords.This final tidbit might be stating the obvious: you cannot buy a pack of six strings and a random seventh. If you have a seven-string guitar, you must shop for a 7-pa ck of strings. English Conversation Classes Language Learning and Children I have to admit, the topic of this TED Talk bothered me at first. Patricia Kuhl, in her TED Talk about language learning in infants, seems to say that if you havent started learning a language before you are one year old, you might as well give up. Ive heard many people repeat this as a scientific fact, and I think its the reason a lot of people dont even try to learn a language. It certainly irritates me as someone who is trying to learn Spanish as an adult, and teaching English classes to adults.I have personally met people who have begun learning a language later in life, and have become so fluent that native speakers of the language can barely detect their accent. Kuhls talk caused the same reaction in comments on the TED website.But I dont think Kuhls main point was to make us adult language learners feel like our task is impossible. Rather, she wanted to show us the amazing abilities of the infant mind, and wonder out loud what we might someday learn from them.Why should you li sten to Patricia Kuhl:Patricia Kuhl is co-director of the Institute for Brain and Learning Sciences at the University of Washington. Shes internationally recognized for her research on early language and brain development, and studies that show how young children learn. Kuhl’s work has played a major role in demonstrating how early exposure to language alters the brain.
